Fleet of racing yachts with black sails, beating close-hauled on a deep blue sea

Case Study

The premier Caribbean sailing gathering

Every spring, the Global Meridian Yacht brings together historic tall ships and contemporary maxis for a week of racing between the British Virgin Islands and Barbados. The previous website, a bare bulletin board lacking art direction, failed to convey either the sporting intensity of the regattas or the elegance of the fleet.
We completely reimagined the digital home: a layout inspired by 18th-century marine cartography, embedded onboard documentary photography, a clear partition between race headquarters and fleet chronicles, and lean code engineered for offshore tracking via satellite.

01 · Historical heritage

Antique charts and the wake of the first frigates

The regatta course follows the routes charted by the first frigates sent to explore and map the Caribbean islands in the 18th century, in the wake of La Boudeuse and La Flore. To honor this lineage without locking the site in nostalgia, the interface incorporates genuine historical hydrographic engravings alongside a delicate grid evoking meridian coordinates.
The palette blends archive parchment tones with deep ocean navy, while crisp typography gives every vessel profile the disciplined precision of a ship’s logbook.

02 · Onboard photography

Water-level perspectives in the heart of the trade winds

Disjointed imagery from earlier editions was replaced by documentary photography captured at sea from chase boats. The ambition was to convey the dramatic heel of hulls close-hauled, the tension of canvas in the trade winds, and the distinctive luminescence of Caribbean waters.
From the moment the homepage opens, full-bleed framing places visitors in the thick of the fleet, right alongside crew maneuvers and racing commitment.

03 · Dual dedicated spaces

Separating the official race board from the vessel registry

A premier regatta addresses two distinct audiences: sailors contending on the water and shore-side enthusiasts following the fleet. We divided the digital platform into two dedicated streams.
The race board gathers leg by leg — from Tortola to Bridgetown — Notices of Race, sailing instructions and handicap-compensated standings. Alongside it, an illustrated registry details the lineage, sail plan and racing history of each registered yacht.

04 · Port of call chronicles

Chronicling harbors and keeping the spirit alive year-round

Annual sporting events often see engagement fade the moment trophies are awarded. To sustain the loyalty of shipowners and crews between editions, the site expands throughout the year with ports of call chronicles.
Each narrative delves into the maritime lore of visited anchorages — from the historic careening wharves of English Harbour to the sheltered bays of Saint Lucia — highlighting shoreside spots where crews reunite once sails are furled.

05 · Shipyards and partners

Celebrating naval architects and master shipbuilders

Behind every participating hull stand a naval architect, a restoration shipyard and a master sailmaker. The yacht registry — from a 1936 classic ketch to a modern maxi — places their craftsmanship front and center.
This space naturally integrates partner houses, marine chronometer makers and official riggers into the living heritage of the fleet.

06 · Technical efficiency

Instant loading, even at remote anchorages or via satellite

Underway between islands or moored in secluded bays, navigators check sailing instructions and standings over satellite links or capricious coastal networks.
We engineered ultra-light static pages and optimized every photograph: the official board and charts load without delay on a smartphone in the cockpit as well as on desktop screens ashore.
